The Military Influence on Irish Music & Dance

Standard

The influence of the military on Irish music and especially dance has often been overlooked.  The significance of the military influence is found in the names of certain set dances such as The Cameronian, The Caledonian (after the Scottish regiments) and The Lancer (after the French De Lancier regiment).  While The Cameronian is a reel, The Caledonian is a jig and The Donegal Lancer’s is a single jig.  The Cameronian is well known and is often heard today in trad music seisiún.
